Creating your photo storage site

The recommended photo storage site is Flickr

Flickr is owned by Yahoo, and is part of their free web services - it is also ideal for our purposes.

If you already have a Yahoo account, you also have a Flickr account (it uses the same login information).
If so, skip to the next page, to see how best to set up the account, for newly digitised old photographs:

Gaining a Flickr account

This only takes a few minutes.... therefore, regardless of how many photos that you initially wish to preserve, you should set it up now, as this will help you with the tutorials that begin on the next page.

It is a fairly normal setup process, but you have a few choices to make, so here are a few tips, to smooth the process (otherwise, click the button above, to figure it out for yourself):

Steps
  1. Find your usual notepad & pen, where you can write down your login information... and be prepared to receive a phone call from Yahoo, or an SMS message on your mobile
  2. Search 'Yahoo' and load their site
  3. Go to the login icon, and choose to register
  4. Enter your name - any names can be entered
This will be the displayed name for your account - anybody looking at your photographs will see this name
  5. Enter the name for your email account - Usually your name will already have been taken by somebody else - the system offers you some alternative choices - you can accept one of the offered options, or try entering a name that you are happy with eg. johnsmith, john.smith, john.smith5000 etc. until the system tells you that your chosen name is available
  6. This name is your ID account name, so make a note: Flickr account - (eg.) john.smith5000
You use this name at login, with your password
  7. Next enter your chosen password - if you suffer from password stress, then write it somewhere in your notepad (most browsers offer to save your password with your account name, but computers can break...)
  8. Enter your telephone number - They ask for your mobile number, but you can enter your landline number - a mobile receives an SMS code - a telephone receives an automated message speaking the 5 digit code (it is clear, and repeated)
  9. Add your date of birth
  10. Choose your sex
  11. Add a 2nd contact telephone number, to assist in the event of you losing your password.
If you have no mobile number, you can ignore this request and simply continue
(you will provide a contact email address in the subsequent tutorial)
  12. Click 'create the account'
  13. The next screen confirms the account - have your telephone next to you, or have your pen and paper ready, to write down the code - it is currently a 5 number code (you will never use this code again)
  14. Click 'call me' - the telephone will ring - a lady will speak the 5 numbers - write them down, or enter them directly into the box provided (or read the SMS and enter the code)
  15. All done - you now have your internet photo storage site (Flickr), plus a useful new email address, and access to everything that Yahoo offers....
