'Scanning' stops the deterioration, and 'restoration' returns the photos close to (and sometimes better than) how they used to look... but the job is only half finished.
The images can be stored on a PC, disc, or memory stick... but the only completely safe storage solution (effectively for eternity) is the internet.

These are genuinely old photographs that have naturally degraded, in the same manner as your own photos will have degraded.
However, to maintain website performance, they are not displayed at highest quality.
We have been forced to scale down and compress the images to the limit.
Note: Your internet photo storage site is capable of displaying your saved and restored images at much higher quality, almost instantaneously.People in areas at risk of flooding
We have experience of this problem, and have provided substantial information on how to deal with flood damaged photographs.
It is recommended that the relevant pages are studied now, rather than after a flood.
General message to visitors
You are likely reading this because you have a photograph collection.... probably stored in boxes.
Typically, even if you have a mind to find a photograph, it probably takes so long, that you never bother.
If this is the case... consider reading Organisation & Assessment, for a guide to rapidly organising your photographs into a useable, and easily accessible collection.
It doesn't compare to the instant availability of internet display, nor does it solve the problem of deterioration. However, you will be able to go straight to the photos that you wish to find.
